What is a Precinct Leader?

  • Precinct Leadership: Empower others to succeed and are public servants
  • Precinct: The smallest geographic area in elections
  • Chair: Represents voters in a precinct, is the local leader and central point of contact for the precinct 
  • Local organizing: Based on Precincts and structure 
  • Party responsibility: Policy platforms, candidates, constituent relations, donor relations, get out the vote

Why is it important to get involved?

  • Grow participation in the party from the local level 
  • Build local leadership at the precinct level to represent constituents to the party at county and state levels

What does a PC do?

How is a Precinct Structured?

  • It is important to be aware of the guidelines for your state and county, the number of precinct seats which are filled or need to be filled 
  • Depending on the location, Precincts are also called wards and districts 
  • Nationwide there are approximately 180,000 precincts 
  • Each state has a different number of precincts
  • Each county has a set number of precincts, with open and filled precinct seats 
  • There are often two (2) representatives per precinct (precinct committee person)
  • Precinct seats are either appointed or elected, depending upon the state and county 
  • Appointment and election dates and procedures vary per state and county 
  • Some precincts have strong PC participation, up to 80-100%
  • Multiple precincts have many open seats, from 50-75% availability to be filled  
  • The precinct structure is under the state and county by laws, statutes, and constitution 
  • Guidelines and standards vary per county and state  
  • Some state and county GOPs provide guidance and have proactive initiatives in recruiting PCs 
  • Some states and counties have local organizations who also participate in precinct recruitment
  • The Board of Elections and Secretary of State office oversees precinct geographic district also by population

What are the responsibilities of a PC?
